PLANTATION @HIGHLAND | HOUSE MUSEUM TOUR

The BACKGROUND

Highland- James Monroe's house museum has been seeking a new way to present itself and attract all age groups, especially the young generation, to the historical museum.

The Approach

Ar to present the Lager site and historical background

Our group has chosen to approach Highland through Augmented Reality. We are providing an AR Plantation Tour for Highland’s visitors that will be taken completely outside of the buildings, therefore utilizing the larger site.

Our goal is to educate guests about the role of Highland not just as a place of residence, but as a functioning plantation. We seek to inform visitors about the community at Highland—focusing on the narrative of all voices and stories, not just Monroe’s, which made this place possible. We wish to situate Highland in the local agricultural economy and Virginia’s and American history more broadly to provide a more holistic understanding of the place and the surrounding landscape.

Why AR?

We believe augmented reality is the best way to both educate and entertain visitors. With AR, we have the capability to display elements of Highland that are no longer present in the landscape, but were such integral parts during Monroe’s era. Our Plantation Life tour will give visitors a first-hand look at what life was like for the community of enslaved and free people at Highland in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, while doing so in an entertaining and educational way. Augmented Reality is also a beneficial method of interpretation, as the tours can be adjusted, rewritten, or transformed when new information discovered or a new narrative is desired.
